Love, East of 95
The Emily Monk Davidson Gallery at the Farmville Community Arts Council is pleased to present Love, East of 95, a photographic exhibition by Karell Craft, a local Farmville artist. This marks not only Karell’s first presentation with our gallery but also his official debut as an exhibiting artist. The exhibition brings together a series of images that reflect life in eastern North Carolina as seen through the artist’s unfiltered and deeply intuitive lens.
Born in Yonkers, NY and now rooted in Farmville, Karell has spent over a decade refining his craft through spontaneous exploration and a commitment to honesty in image-making. His approach is refreshingly simple: “Do I like what I see? Does it make me feel anything?” That raw instinct drives a body of work centered on authenticity, feeling, and quiet observation.
Love, East of 95 is a visual love letter to a region often passed over yet rich in memory, texture, and truth. From weathered backroads to hushed towns that feel paused in time, Karell captures “places where stories linger in the atmosphere, waiting to be told.” His subjects are everyday moments and environments. Real, unposed, and deeply human.
In keeping with the spirit of his work, the photographs are presented without traditional frames or matting, a freedom of choice gifted to the potential collector. Prints are tacked to the wall, allowing the rawness of the imagery to speak without barrier or ornament. This minimalist approach to presentation honors the honesty of Karell’s aesthetics, allowing the work to exist as it was captured and invites viewers to encounter the work as it was created: unfiltered, accessible, grounded in instinct.
Entirely shot freehand, the work maintains a sense of immediacy that invites viewers to slow down and see what Karell sees. “Fleeting moments, authentic, raw, and often imperfect, that reflect the realness of everyday life” take center stage in this quietly powerful collection. Each image offers a chance to reflect, remember, and assign personal meaning to places that might otherwise go unnoticed.
With a palette rooted in natural light and instinctual composition, the collection brings a grounded, contemplative presence to any setting. These works offer more than visual interest, they create a sense of place, of pause, of connection. For those drawn to imagery that invites reflection and reveals meaning over time, this body of work offers a lasting and personal kind of beauty.
His work can be found on Instagram under the name Interested In Madness, where he encourages open conversation about artistic vision, storytelling through imagery, & the diverse ways photography can move us. We invite you to explore Love, East of 95 and consider the ways these photographs might continue to speak in the spaces where we live, work, and gather.
